How to Whipstitch

Whipstitching is used to join two pieces of plastic canvas together while covering the edges neatly. Whipstitches are always worked in the same direction which creates a series of diagonal stitches that nicely wraps around and covers the raw edge of the canvas while joining the two pieces together.

  1. After your plastic canvas pieces are stitched, hold the two pieces of plastic canvas together with holes aligned and with wrong sides together.
  2. To whipstitch, starting in the last hole on the left edge, bring your needle up through both pieces of plastic canvas from back to front. Leave a 2-inch tail.
  3. Continuing to hold the two pieces together, work one whipstitch in each pair of aligned holes along the entire edge to join the pieces together.
  4. When finished, run the yarn end under an inch or so of stitches on the back side of your work to secure.
