Finger Knitting
Finger knitting is a simple way to make a loose knitted cord or tube. Unlike an I-cord that requires needles, this can be done without any extra tools. The knit cord can be used for many different things, such as bracelets, necklaces, ties and so forth.
Finger knitting is a great way for kids to learn the art of knitting. Follow along in the video to learn how to cast on, knit and bind off using only your fingers and yarn. The knitted yarn "tube" that you create can be made in different lengths. Try different kinds of yarn and have fun teaching this to kids of all ages!
Pinch the yarn tail between your thumb and hand. Spread your fingers wide and then *weave the yarn between the first and second finger, forward to the front of the ring finger and then back around your pinky finger. Once the yarn is wrapped around your pinky finger, weave it behind the ring finger, in front of the middle finger and then behind and around to the front of the index finger. You have now cast on the stitches*.
Repeat between the * again, at the end bringing the working yarn between your thumb and hand and holding it in place. There will be two strands wrapped around each finger, one above the other. Take the bottom strand of the index finger and pull it up and over the finger to the back and drop it. Repeat with the bottom strands on the next three fingers. Pull the remaining loops downward on each finger**. Before continuing, take the end tail from between your thumb and place it between your index and middle fingers, letting it hang at the back of your hand.
Then repeat the process from the * to the ** until you reach your desired length, ending with one loop around each finger.
To bind off, take the loop from the pinky finger and move it to the ring finger, then move the bottom loop up and over the finger. Move the remaining loop from the ring finger over to the middle finger. Bring the bottom loop up and over the finger. Move the loop from the middle finger over to the index finger. Bring the bottom loop up and over the finger. You have one loop remaining on one finger. Cut the yarn and pull the loop to pull the yarn tail through the last stitch. Your piece is complete.
