Crocodile Stitch
The crocodile stitch pattern is created by working layers of scales. It is a unique stitch with several steps. There are also different versions of the stitch pattern. It may be worked in garter or stockinette stitch. It may also vary in the number of stitches it is worked over, usually between five and nine. The number of rows it is worked over can also vary between five and seven. This video shows the general technique. It shows a small scale that starts with five stitches and is worked in garter stitch. Each scale is worked into one stitch, and all rows of one scale are worked before continuing to work the row.
Make Scale: (Knit one, yarn over, knit one, yarn over, knit one) in the same stitch. You now have five stitches. Turn to work back into those stitches. Knit the five stitches. Turn. Knit two. (Knit one, yarn over, knit one, yarn over, knit one) in the next stitch. Knit the last two stitches. There are now nine stitches. Turn. Knit one, then bind off 7 stitches knitwise. You have now bound off the remainder of the scale stitches.
Next you will join the scale to the piece that you are working. Knit the next stitch and then pass the first stitch on the right-hand needle over this stitch and off the needle. Turn. Knit the first stitch. There is now a gap between stitches. The scale is between this gap. Pull and fold the scale down toward you so that you see the upper edge of the scale (the flat base of it). Pick up and knit five stitches evenly along this upper edge of the scale. Slip the last stitch knitwise to the right-hand needle. Knit the next stitch on the body of your piece and pass the slipped stitch over it and off the right-hand needle.
Knit the remainder of the row as the pattern states. Make a scale as above when directed.
