How to Work a Straight Stitch
The straight stitch, as its name implies, follows a straight line. It can be stitched vertically, horizontally or slanted in any direction and can be of any length. The straight stitch is primarily used for creating lines, borders, and details. A lengthy straight stitch may also be referred to as a long stitch.

Bring needle up through the back of the fabric at (1), going back down through the fabric at (2).
