Split Single Crochet (abbreviated split sc or ssc)

The split single crochet has the appearance of a knit stitch. It is a denser stitch than a regular single crochet. It’s used a lot for projects that need to be sturdy such as baskets. It’s also used a lot in colorwork to get a knit look in crochet form.

This stitch is worked similarly to a single crochet. The only difference is that the hook is inserted between the legs of the V of the stitch.

The split single crochet stitch can be worked in the round or in rows.

In the round: Insert the hook between the legs of the next single crochet, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.

Another way this might be written is: Single crochet in the center of the V of the indicated single crochet.
