Puff Stitch (abbreviated ps or puff st)
Puff stitches are decorative stitches that create raised bumps on the fabric. area puff stitch is created by working several wraps and yarn overs into one stitch and then pulling through all the loops to finish it. The number of wraps and yarn overs can vary from pattern to pattern. This stitch is a great way to add texture to your crochet project and can be used in a variety of projects.
Note: Crochet does not have standardized naming conventions for special stitches. Designers may call stitches by whatever name they prefer. For this reason, it is difficult to search online for how a particular special stitch is created. Another reason it is hard to find the “correct” way to work a particular special stitch is because each designer might work a special stitch in their own unique way. Be sure to follow the directions stated in your pattern for how to work the stitch.
Yarn over, insert the hook in the indicated stitch or space, yarn over, pull the loop through the stitch and make the loop the same height as the previous stitches in the working row, [yarn over, insert the hook in the same stitch, yarn over, pull the loop through the stitch and make the loop the same height as the working row] twice, yarn over, pull through all 7 loops on the hook, chain 1 (to close).
You may also see it written:
Yarn over, insert the hook in the indicated stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, [yarn over, insert the hook in the same stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop] twice (7 loops on the hook), yarn over, draw through all 7 loops on the hook.
Generally, a chain-1 is worked at the end of a puff stitch to close it but not always as in the second example. The number of times you work the repeat in brackets can vary from pattern to pattern.
