How to Work a Cross Stitch

The cross stitch is the primary stitch used in the craft that shares its name. Each cross stitch consists of two diagonal stitches that form an "X" shape. When stitching on Aida, cross stitches are typically worked over one square, while on linen or evenweave fabric, they are usually worked over two threads. Even tension and uniform direction of the stitches are key to achieving a neat and professional-looking project.

CrossStitch (Aida)

Bring needle up through the back of the fabric at (1) and go back down through the fabric at (2), then up at (3) and down at (4).

Cross-Stitch (Over 2)

Bring needle up through the back of the fabric at (1), crossing over two threads and going back down through the fabric at (2), then up at (3) and down at (4).
