How to Read a Plastic Canvas Graph

"Measure twice, cut once!"

Almost every plastic canvas pattern requires that you follow graphs for at least some of the pieces. Graphs are almost never actual size, so don't be concerned if your cut pieces are larger or smaller than the graph. Unlike sewing patterns, graphs are not designed to be used as actual patterns for cutting canvas, but rather for counting, cutting and stitching guides. Count the holes on the graph, mark your canvas to match, then cut.

In some patterns, placement lines will be shown on the graph to help you place decorative stitched pieces. In other patterns, you will be directed to place items “as shown in photo.” Use hot glue sparingly and try not to let the glue show through your finished design.

Remember, the old carpenter’s adage, “measure twice, cut once” is good advice for plastic canvas stitchers.
