How to Double Crochet (abbreviated dc)

Double crochet is one of the basic crochet stitches. It is a taller stitch than single crochet. It produces a fabric with gaps between the stitches, making it a bit airy. The height of the stitches allows you to finish projects quickly, and double crochet is the basis of many decorative (special) stitches.

Remember, you will never work into the first chain from the crochet hook unless the crochet pattern you are using specifically directs you to do so. When working into a chain, be sure to go through the center of the V of the chain and under the bar at the back (two strands over hook); do not twist the chain.

Row 1: Make a slip knot (or twist start) and make the number of chains stated in the pattern (for this sample chain 14). Bring the yarn over the hook from back to front, skip the first three chains from the hook and then insert the hook in the fourth chain. You should have two strands of yarn on your hook.

Note: How many chains to skip at the beginning varies from pattern to pattern. It isn’t wrong for these instructions and a pattern to differ. It all depends on what the designer feels looks best, so be sure to read the instructions carefully.

Bring the yarn over the crochet hook from back to front and draw it through the chain stitch and up onto the working area of the hook; you now have three loops on the hook.
