Extended Stitches
Most of the basic stitches can become extended stitches. Extended stitches do what their name implies: They extend the stitch a bit, making it taller than the normal basic stitch. So, for example, an extended single crochet is just a little taller than a single crochet but has a different look than a half double crochet (the next larger basic stitch). If you look closely, you can see an extra chain stitch at the base of the extended stitch. This is what gives it the extra height. Below are explanations of how to work extended stitches with the basic stitches.
Extended Single Crochet (abbreviated ext sc or extended sc)
Insert the hook in the indicated stitch or space, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 1 loop on the hook, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on the hook.
