Condensed Mosaic Stitch

The condensed mosaic stitch in plastic canvas is often used for filling in background areas. It is worked with a series of alternating short and long stitches that form diagonal rows across the plastic canvas.

  1. To work the condensed mosaic stitch, bring your needle up through the canvas in the lower left corner and down in the upper right corner, crossing over one bar of plastic canvas. This makes your first short stitch.
  2. Start your next stitch one hole below the beginning of the first short stitch and take the needle down in the hole to the right of the ending of the first short stitch, crossing over two bars. This makes your first long stitch.
  3. Work additional short and long stitches following the diagrams below.
